The Night I Packed a Ball Gown… and a Personal Alarm

There’s something magical about Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.

It’s vibrant, cultural, full of life, music spilling out onto the streets, people dressed up, laughter in the air. It’s also, if we’re being honest, a little rough around the edges.

And that’s part of its charm.

But it’s also part of why I packed a little extra something that night.

I was heading out to watch a friend perform in a charity even, dressed in a full ball gown, heels clicking along the pavement, walking from our nearby Airbnb with a girlfriend. We were excited, a little glam, a little overdressed (in the best way), and very much ready for a night out.

Neatly on the side of my bag was my personal alarm. Not because I expected something to happen. Not because I was afraid. But because, I like to feel prepared. As we walked through the Valley, I noticed something subtle. I wasn’t scanning every corner.I wasn’t overthinking every passerby. I just felt… calmer.

It’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it, that quiet confidence that comes from knowing you have something in your corner. Something small, simple, but powerful enough to draw attention if you ever needed it.

And the truth is? I didn’t need it at all that night.

It was a beautiful evening. Full of music, connection, and celebration.

But here’s the moment that stayed with me. A friend we met at the ball had to leave earlier and walk back to her car alone. You know that moment, the quick mental calculation, the slight hesitation, the “I’ll be fine” energy we’ve all seen (and said ourselves). Without thinking twice, I reached into my bag and handed her my spare alarm.

“Just take this.” Her whole energy shifted instantly. Relief. Gratitude. A little smile that said, okay… I’ve got something. She thanked me as she left and I knew exactly what she was feeling.

That’s why I created this. Not just for emergencies. Not just for worst-case scenarios.

But for that feeling. That subtle shift from: “I hope I’ll be okay”to “I’ve got myself covered.”

Because it’s not really about the product. It’s about confidence. It’s about control. It’s about women moving through the world feeling just that little bit more secure, whether they’re in activewear, business attire… or a ball gown in Fortitude Valley.

And if something small can give you that?

I think it’s worth carrying.
